Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (TRS)

The TRS will assess the patient and provide treatments that will help the patient return safely to his/her community to resume his/her leisure lifestyle. Therapeutic recreation will use activities the patient enjoys to help reach rehabilitation goals. These goals will include improving social, emotional, physical, and thinking skills. Patient education is an important part of rehabilitation.

The TRS will provide education with the following issues when appropriate:

• Alcohol/substance use education related to the patient’s specific diagnosis
• Intimacy and sexuality education
• Leisure education and counseling
• Return to sports and recreation following brain injury
• Community leisure resources and contacts
• Stress management education
• Pedestrian safety evaluation
• Public transportation assessment and training
• Prosthesis education related to sports and recreation
• Stroke prevention education

The main goal is for the patient to be able to safely return to a satisfying leisure lifestyle.
