HCMC was the first transplant program in the Upper Midwest. Established in 1963, our transplant program has played a vital role in the treatment of chronic kidney disease with kidney transplantation.

We currently perform approximately 80 kidney transplants per year. At HCMC, we have performed more than 2300 kidney transplants, with an increasing percentage involving living donors. Our experience, along with our use of new therapies, diagnostic tools, and surgical procedures, allow us to give our transplant patients and living donors the best possible care.

Our transplant program is a collaborative effort among professionals who specialize in the re-transplant, operative, and long-term follow-up care of ESRD patients, in partnership with their primary physician or nephrologist.

HCMC's Renal Transplant Program was selected as one of three "top performers" in the Transplant Services 2003 Benchmarking Project conducted by University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC).

UHC, a national coalition of academic medical centers, conducts benchmarking projects to identify clinical and operational practices that contribute to top performance as measured by evidence-based literature. This transplant project examined many clinical and administrative performance measures submitted by 46 transplant centers, including many of the best known centers in the country.
