MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTORS

Welcome to Hennepin County Medical Center's Combined Emergency Medicine — Internal Medicine Residency Program. We are very excited about this program, a natural outgrowth of our two outstanding departments with long histories in successful graduate medical education. The combined program offers an integrated residency approved for board certification in both specialties.

Our institution enjoys a collegial, close-knit working relationship between the Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine Departments. Both departments are committed to clinical excellence, graduate medical education and research. The faculty in each department holds full-time academic appointments at the University of Minnesota, and each department teaches many medical students from the University, as well as visiting students.

Our Emergency Medicine Department has 22 full-time faculty, and the residency training program in emergency medicine has been in existence since 1972. We have over 200 graduates practicing throughout the United States. We offer fellowship training in EMS, Hyperbaric Medicine, Toxicology, Research, and Ultrasound. Our program is a graduated program in which resident supervisory responsibilities increase with experience.

Our Internal Medicine Department, with 80 full-time faculty, has housed an independent residency training program for more than 50 years. We train 18 residents per year, half of whom pursue subspecialty training, and half of whom become general internists in academic settings, hospitalist groups or primary care practices. We offer ACGME accredited fellowship training in Critical Care and Geriatrics and are also a major participating institution in University of Minnesota based fellowships in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, and Pulmonary/Critical Care.

Our five-year curriculum bridges both departments. Residents rotate in 3-month blocks. The tight-knit relationships our single site program offers ensures that our residents will feel welcome and supported in each department.

Please visit our websites on the Emergency Medicine Residency and the Internal Medicine Residency for more information about those programs. Thank you for your interest - we look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Anne Pereira, M.D. Marc Martel, M.D.
