What is a Nurse-Midwife?
Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) are advanced practice nurses with specialized training
and experience in midwifery.
CNMs provide prenatal care, labor and delivery, care after birth, yearly gynecological exams,
newborn care, assistance with family planning decisions, preconception care, menopausal management and counseling in health care management and disease prevention. They can
prescribe medication, perform medical procedures and provide other interventions when
medically necessary.
In our practice
The midwives that make up the Nurse-Midwife Service at Hennepin County Medical Center see patients in traditional clinic settings and deliver babies at Hennepin County Medical Center. The Nurse-Midwife Unit at Hennepin County Medical Center is located within the Birth Center, giving patients access to a full range of services, including anesthesiologists, OB physicians, pediatric services, Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit, and lactation services.
