PGY-1

Orientation:  The first month of combined training at HCMC is a mix of EM shifts and ambulatory IM experience designed to familiarize you with both departments and to let the senior residents and faculty get to know you.  EM/IM interns start their medicine continuity clinic this month.  A more relaxed schedule in both departments allows attendance at medicine morning report, noon conferences, and EM stabilization conference on Thursday morning, other good ways to meet your new colleagues.

G1 Year: The EM/IM pair join their categorical colleagues as interns on each inpatient medicine service (Green = general, Blue = cardiology, Red = renal/dialysis, and Yellow = MICU) as well as the off-service EM months (Peds, Trauma Surgery, and OB/Gyn).  EM/IM PGY-1s are primary medical providers in the ED, supervised by EM pit bosses (3rd year residents) and faculty.  EM orthopedics is made up of shifts covering the orthopedic rooms and managing fractures and other injuries and learning splinting, wound care, and other procedures directly from ED faculty.
