On the IM side, combined residents function as senior residents managing inpatient teams (including supervising interns and students).  There is no “resi-tern” or PGY 1.5 in our program, allowing you to progress in responsibility with your categorical peers. 

The months of the PGY-2 year spent in the ED are again as PMP, but with added responsibility for solo overnight shifts in Team Center B, mastery of ultrasound, and critical procedures in the stabilization room.  The off-service PGY-2 EM months are spent as a senior resident managing the Trauma Surgery team and a very useful month that combines experience in Toxicology, EMS (including ambulance and helicopter ride-alongs), and several specialty clinics (oral surgery, derm, colorectal, radiology).
