This is a challenging year, as EM/IM G3s transition to their new role as ED supervisors (pit bosses) in Team Center A. First, G3s complete 2 months of Neurosurgery where the focus is managing patients with critical head injury in the SICU. A month called ‘resuscitation’ also comes before pit bossing—this month you get certification in ATLS, PALS, and as an ACLS instructor, as well as small group didactics from EM faculty in the acute management of ED critical illness (airway adjuncts, thoracotomy, toxicology, etc). The IM months in year 3 are spent with several subspecialty consult services including Nephrology, Pulmonary, ID, and GI. There is also the second of six selective months in the program, which can be used to explore a specialty in more depth (possible fellowship later?), get involved in basic science or clinical research, pursue a diploma in Tropical and Travel Medicine & Hygiene thru the Global Health Pathway, or improve procedural proficiency.
