Laboratory Educational Programs

The following programs at HCMC are conducted under the guidelines of the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS, 8410 W. Bryn Mawr, Suite 670, Chicago, IL 60631, phone 773-714-8880).

NAACLS is an international agency for accreditation and approval of educational programs in the clinical laboratory sciences and related health professions.

Lab Technologists

ABOUT THE CLINICAL AND ANATOMIC LABORATORIES

The HCMC Laboratories provide comprehensive laboratory services in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. The state-of-the-art laboratories are staffed by more than 165 FTEs, plus 8 medical staff members (pathologists/PhDs), who perform and analyze more than 3 million lab tests per year. The central lab supports several ancillary labs (off-site and on-site clinics and point-of-care settings), offering students outstanding educational environments in both large and small laboratory settings.

The laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and the American Association of Clinical Chemists/College of American Pathologists (AACC/CAP) for forensic drug testing.

Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)/ Medical Technologist (MT)
The Medical Technology program at HCMC has received a seven year NAACLS approval via an on site inspection in 2003. The program currently has six university affiliates that it accepts students for internships. See further information.


Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT)/ Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
HCMC Laboratory is a clinical site for Medical Laboratory Technician interns from Argosy University and North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) from January through May. Argosy and NHCC hold the accreditation for these programs.

Histology
The HCMC Laboratory is an approved clinical site for Argosy University, which holds the accreditation for this program.

Cytology
The HCMC Cytology Laboratory is an approved clinical site for cytology interns from the University of North Dakota (UND- Grand Forks). UND holds the accreditation.

Phlebotomy
In addition to teaching phlebotomy skills to many HCMC employees, the lab serves as a clinical site for phlebotomy students from the College of St. Catherine and from the Health Careers Institute.
