Pre-Clinical Competencies
What
in the world is a Pre-Clinical Competency? A competency is simply a statement
of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to perform a particular
activity. Competencies are the expected outcome of learning.
A
Pre-Clinical Competency is a statement of:
what you
should know and
what you
should be able to do
prior
to beginning your clinical education at HCMC.
HCMC and your university have been working closely
together to integrate your college education with the clinical experience
at the hospital. We believe medical technology/clinical laboratory science
is a four-year continuous and coordinated education. All of the science
courses you have taken at college are the building blocks of medical technology.
This science, which you have chosen to be your profession, is detailed,
analytical, and overwhelming in content. The "body of knowledge"
is so great it would be impossible to learn it all in nine months at HCMC.
To be successful you must draw upon your college background and use the
knowledge and skills that you have already learned.
Our emphasis at HCMC will be on:
Applying your science background
to the clinical laboratory setting
Teaching new skills and technical
applications
Teaching new knowledge
Correlating laboratory data to
the patient's clinical condition
Developing professionalism
Helping you to become a confident and
competent medical technologist
The
clinical education is a rigorous one and although these Pre-Clinical Competencies
seem overwhelming, if you study and review them they will help ease your
transition from college to the hospital laboratory.
NOTE:
Each student is required to write out answers for all of the objectives.
If the objective involves the performance of some activity, describe what
you did in your college courses in order to meet that objective. These
answers must be turned in to the HCMC Program Director on the first day
of orientation. The HCMC Education Techs will evaluate them for completeness.
You will be required to review and know this material when you enter each
of the rotations.
