INTRODUCTION

The clinical immunology course at HCMC consists of practical laboratory experience supplemented with reading and discussion activity for the more theoretical topics. The laboratory experience will cover many methods including serology, ELISA, electrophoresis, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry and other immunoassays.

Prior to this clinical experience all students will have taken a required immunology course at their university. These courses vary but a core of basic knowledge is covered by all of them. The course at HCMC will build on this basic knowledge with some material that will be review from college courses as well as new material.

For some students it has been a year or more since completion of the immunology college course but for all students it is essential to review this basic material that will be assumed knowledge upon arrival at HCMC. There will not be an exam on this material. You will turn in your assignments the first day of orientation; they will be evaluated for completeness and will be returned to you for your use during the course and for future exams.

Assignments (in Stevens):
For each chapter, read the assigned pages and write out the answers to each of the assigned learning objectives on the first pages of the chapter (these answers are what you will turn in on your first day at HCMC). Self-test yourself with the assigned review questions at the end of the chapter (the answers are provided). It may also be useful (but is not required) to write out notes from any of these that you found difficult, e.g., why a certain answer was incorrect. Do not concern yourself with the exercises at the end of each chapter.
