An EEG (electroencephalogram) records electrical impulses
from the brain to help diagnose neurological problems. Prolonged EEG monitoring,
with concurrent video monitoring in the lab or with a cassette tape recorder
outside of the lab, can be performed to diagnose unusual spells or seizures.
EPs (evoked potentials) record the conduction of an external stimulus
along nerve pathways to the brain. An EMG (electromyography) is a test
that checks for any injury or damage to the nerves and muscles in the
arms, legs, or back. All of these testing modalities can be performed
in the operating room to monitor neurologic function during surgery.
