HCMC Nurse-Midwife Service
HCMCs Nurse-Midwife Service was the first Nurse-Midwife Service in Minnesota. We have been welcoming new babies since 1971. We believe that pregnancy is a special time in the life of a family, and that birth can be an empowering experience. We believe in keeping labor as natural as possible, but are skilled in using interventions when needed to keep mothers and babies safe and healthy. Physicians who specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology are available as part of the health care team. Rita O'Reilly, CNM, is director of the Nurse-Midwife Service.
For information about the Nurse-Midwife Service, call: Nurse-Midwife Patient Line: (612) 873-2946 Nurse-Midwife Business Office: (612) 873-2203 Or e-mail Rita O'Reilly, CNM, Nurse-Midwife Service Director The Nurse-Midwives attend births in the Nurse-Midwife Unit across the hallway from the Labor and Delivery unit where physicians deliver babies. Our patients stay in the same room for labor, birth, and their postpartum stay. We have 8 private rooms, each with its own bathroom and tub. Every room has a chair that pulls out to a bed, so that your partner can stay overnight with you and your baby. There is open visiting for siblings and grandparents. We support moms through their labor. Moms are encouraged to walk or change positions by sitting in a rocking chair, resting in bed or soaking in a warm tub for comfort, or find other ways to work with their labor. Pain medication is also available. HCMCs Nurse-Midwives deliver more than 700 babies each year. Our cesarean section rate is 12.7% while HCMC as a whole is 16%, well below the national average of 25%. Episiotomy rate is 9%. About 50% of our patients are non-English speaking with Spanish, Somolian and Hmong making up the largest groups. Hennepin County Medical Center was named one of the 10 best places to have a baby in 1996, 1997, and 2002. See the articles below.
