HCMCs Nurse-Midwife Service was the first Nurse-Midwife Service in Minnesota. We have been welcoming new babies since 1971. We believe that pregnancy is a special time in the life of a family, and that birth can be an empowering experience. We believe in keeping labor as natural as possible, but are skilled in using interventions when needed to keep mothers and babies safe and healthy. Physicians who specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology are available as part of the health care team. The Nurse-Midwives have a separate unit, next to the
Labor and Delivery unit where physicians deliver babies. Our patients
stay in the same room for labor, birth, and their postpartum stay. We
have 8 private rooms, each with its own bathroom and tub. Every room has
a chair that pulls out to a bed, so that your partner can stay overnight
with you and your baby. Some rooms have double beds. There is open visiting
for siblings and grandparents.
We support moms through their labor, encouraging them to walk and change positions. Sit in a rocking chair, on a birthing ball or rest in bed or try soaking in a warm bath for comfort, or find other ways to work with their labor. Pain medication is also available. HCMCs Nurse-Midwives deliver more than 650 babies each year. Our cesarean section rate is 8% while HCMC as a whole is 12% well below the national average of 23%. Episiotomy rate is 13%. About 40% of our patients are non-English speaking with Spanish, Somolian and Hmong making up the largest groups. Midwife Patient
