Nurses at Hennepin County Medical Center collaborate to provide quality patient care in a healing environment using professional knowledge, mastery of skills and compassion.
Practice environments for nurses include inpatient medical/surgical acute and critical care, Women’s and Children’s care, ambulatory care, the operating room and procedural care areas, and the emergency department.
HCMC employs more than 1400 RNs. Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Assistants/Mental Health Workers, Nursing Assistants and Patient Services Coordinators also work to provide 24-hour care to our patients.

The role of the professional nurse at Hennepin is to care, connect and coordinate.
- Nurses care for people as they experience birth, growth, health, illness and death. They give nursing care to patients and their families, using specialized nursing knowledge, skills, and experience.
- Nurses connect with patients by establishing relationships with patients and their families, communities and team members. Nurses coordinate care and are accountable to the patients.
- This includes actively coordinating the plan of care, including patient and family education, creating
a safe environment, communicating effectively, working with the patient and family to adjust the plan of care whenever needed, and using resources effectively.
