The Office of the Medical Director provides leadership, coordination, and administrative support to HCMC medical staff, hospital administration, and residents to promote excellent health care and medical education. Major units within the Office of the Medical Director include:

Medical Informatics, (612) 873-8502
Medical Informatics is principally responsible for representing the clinical needs of the medical staff to Information Services and to outside clinical systems vendors. Communication is facilitated through the Information Technology Steering Committee, Medical Executive Committee, and the Physician’s Technology Advisory Task Force. Medical Informatics is also responsible for small clinical database design, Macintosh computer support, and World Wide Web services for the institution.

Medical Staff and Provider Services handles issues relating to medical staff membership, credentialing, privileging, medical staff and alumni databases, policies and procedures, adherence to medical-staff-related JCAHO standards, and all other issues governed by

the medical staff bylaws.

About our Medical Director

Dr. Michael Belzer is in his 5th term as HCMC Medical Director, making him the longest serving medical director of a public hospital in the United States today.

As HCMC Medical Director, Dr. Belzer is responsible for the overall hospital medical staff leadership and direction; ensuring careful supervision over the professional work in all clinical departments and services; the functioning of the clinical organization of the medical center; maintaining the highest possible standards of undergraduate and graduate education in the medical sciences; medical staff compliance; and legislative advocacy with County, State and Federal officials as well as serving as an HCMC spokesperson.

"He provides the steady, experienced leadership we need during these times of change. His advocacy work on behalf of HCMC at the state capitol and with our federal policymakers continues to be very effective, as documented by the many positive and complimentary comments submitted by state and federal leaders and policymakers at the time of his reappointment."

After successful completion of an extensive evaluation process and approval by the Medical Executive committee, the Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. board unanimously approved his reappointment in March, 2010.
