Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) provides care for infants, children, and adolescents who are critically ill or injured. Common conditions that that cause critical illnesses are trauma, infectious diseases, and poisoning. Physicians who specialize in critical care, called pediatric intensivists, lead a team of nurses and allied medical professionals who are trained to care for the critically ill pediatric patient.

Supportive services for pediatric patients at HCMC include the Pediatric Head Injury Program and Knapp Rehabilitation Center.

Our doctors

Andrew Kiragu, MD, FAAP, is the director of the PICU. Dr. Kiragu completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care at the University of Minnesota.

Lakshmi Raman, M.D., is a physician in the PICU. Dr. Raman is a graduate of Madras Medical College in Madras Tamilnado India.

David Hirschman, M.D., is a physician in the PICU.
