The Service League was founded in 1959 by prominent community citizens who sought a means to mobilize the community behind a drive to fund a new public hospital.

The existing hospital, founded in 1887, had long outgrown

the inadequate patchwork of buildings known as General Hospital.

Service League staff and volunteers

The Service League’s first role was to lead the public awareness campaign that would result in a successful 1964 bond issue to build a new facility.  The Service League has remained vital to the life of HCMC and has evolved to meet its ever changing and challenging needs.
