Information for Health Care Providers Level 1 Trauma Center Hennepin County Medical Center is Minnesota’s first verified Level 1 Trauma Center, the highest level of trauma care. We are a regional expert in providing care to patients with TBI. Our neurosurgeons are renowned for their nationally funded research in TBI & hyperbaric oxygen, and we are staffed 24/7 in order to care for patients as quickly as possible. What sets us apart State-of-the-art monitoring in our Surgical/Trauma/Neuroscience Intensive Unit Care, including equipment to monitor brain oxygen and temperature, is available at all times. Neurosurgeons stay at the hospital 24/7 to be able to respond quickly to changes in a patient’s condition. The Pediatric Brain Injury Program is designed to meet the needs of children and adolescents with traumatic and other acquired brain injuries, many of whom have been treated at our Level 1 Trauma Center. The goals of the program are to help each child overcome physical, cognitive and emotional challenges to reach his/her maximum potential and to provide family education and support. Our Pediatric Brain Injury Program was the first in the nation to publish guidelines for school staff addressing the needs of students with mild TBI as they return to school. The Miland E. Knapp Rehabilitation Center, an on-site, acute rehabilitation program, has the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accreditation to be an inpatient brain injury rehabilitation program for adults and adolescents. Outpatient care is also available at Knapp for the single and multi-service rehabilitation needs of TBI patients. The center was the first in Minnesota to be accredited as a brain injury treatment center. The Mild to Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic at Hennepin County Medical Center offers a unique system of diagnosing, treating and caring for patients who are experiencing post-traumatic effects of an injury to the brain. Their multidisciplinary staff is lead by a physician board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. The team includes Psychiatry, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Neuropsychology and Clinical Psychology.
