The ALS Center of Excellence treats patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive degenerative disease of the nervous system. The disease is not rare, and it can affect individuals from any background. In the United States, more than 5,000 people are diagnosed with ALS each year. Early symptoms of ALS include muscle stiffness and weakness and may include difficulty with speech and swallowing. Individuals are affected in different ways, and the disease progresses differently in each person. Patients are diagnosed through neurological testing and a study of the individual's medical history. ALS patients require a great deal of physical and emotional care from family, friends, and health care professionals.

About our clinics: This is a hospital-based clinic owned by Hennepin County Medical Center. Many insurance plans pay for health care services provided in a hospital-based clinic differently than those provided in a doctor’s office. Your insurance may require that you meet your annual deductible and/or require that you pay a percentage of the bill rather than just an office visit co-payment. You should check with your insurance company if you have any questions. Read our FAQs about hospital-based clinics to learn more.
