Inpatient Statistics

  • Knapp serves an average of 300 inpatients per year. Patients ages 13 and above are admitted to the comprehensive and brain injury programs; patients ages 18 and above are admitted to the stroke program.
  • The overall length of stay for inpatients is an average of 13 days.
  • In 2010, 75% of inpatients were discharged to their home community. Some patients come into the hospital without homes or families to assist them. Patients may also be discharged to a homeless shelter or a sub-acute rehabilitation facility.
  • During an over-the-phone survey, 98% of patients were satisfied with the care they received at Knapp Rehabilitation Center (2010).

Patients receive 3 hours of therapy per day or 15 hours per week. Included in these therapies are Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy. Other services provided to the patients include Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology, Therapeutic Recreation, and Social Work. Rehab Nursing is provided on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis. Each patient’s rehabilitation program is outlined and modified as needed by a rehabilitation physician (Physiatrist).

The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) represents 18 areas of daily living. Patients are scored upon admission and discharge. The difference between the scores is averaged and compared to the national scores.

In 2010, Knapp Rehabilitation Center had 273 patients discharged. Of those patients, 115 were able to be contacted for a phone interview regarding their satisfaction after their discharge. 113 of the patients that were interviewed stated they were "satisfied with the care they received at Knapp Rehabilitation Center AND would recommend Knapp Rehab to others."

The brain injury program information includes traumatic brain injuries and non-traumatic brain injuries. When they are not depicted seperately, they are combined in our data to form the overall brain injury program information.

Out of the total patients treated at Knapp Rehabilitation Center in 2010, 25% were stroke patients. Nationally, the percentage of stroke patients treated in acute hospitals was 22% in 2010.
