Parkside Alternative Medicine Clinic: Chiropractic
Chiropractic recognizes the body's ability to heal itself after physical injury, mental or environmental stress. Chiropractic is a natural, drug-free approach to treating injuries and pain. The Alternative Medicine Clinic is proud to have Chiropractic services available on site since July 1999.
Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the spinal column and the nervous system. The Chiropractor will obtain a list of the patient's current symptom(s), review their medical history, pertinent family history and results of prior treatment for the current or past symptoms. The patient is examined using appropriate orthopedic, neurologic chiropractic tests and repeated spinal movements and postural positions that increase or decrease the patient's symptoms. The McKenzie Method** is one of the examinations used in the Alternative Medicine Clinic.
The McKenzie Method philosophy is of active patient involvement and education for back, neck and extremity problems. The key distinction is its initial assessment component which is a safe and reliable means to accurately reach a diagnosis and only then make the appropriate treatment plan. After using this examination method, the Chiropractor will have a valid indicator to know right away whether and how the method will work for the patient.
The results of the history and examination lead to identifying the patient's symptom and complaints. Treatment is administered in a series of chiropractic visits. Some patients feel immediate relief of their symptoms, while others experience relief after several treatments. The length and frequency of treatment is determined by the chronic nature of the problem or severity of injury. Treatment consists of manual muscle stimulation, spinal mobilization or spinal manipulation.
If deemed necessary, the Chiropractor may utilize x-rays, CT or MRI scans and/or the patient may be referred to another physician or physical therapist. Acupuncture and massage therapy are among the treatment modalities utilized.
Patient education is a critical aspect of the chiropractic treatments with specific attention given to correct posture while performing daily activities and home care exercises.
**The McKenzie Method was developed in New Zealand by Physical Therapist Robin McKenzie. A link is provided for more information on this Method: www.mckenziemdt.org/
