Pediatric Brain Injury Program

The Pediatric Brain Injury Program is designed to meet the needs of children and adolescents with traumatic and other acquired brain injuries, many of whom have been treated at HCMC's Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. HCMC provides a full range of state-of-the-art medical and rehabilitative services.

The goals of the program are to help each child overcome physical, cognitive and emotional challenges to reach his or her maximum potential and to provide family education and support. The program serves inpatients and outpatients, and provides evaluation, treatment and consulting services.

Children with brain injuries have needs that can be very different from those of adults with brain injuries. We evaluate and treat children from birth to 18 years with all degrees of acquired brain injury. Most of these children have experienced a mild to moderate brain injury. Many of these children may benefit from short-term inpatient rehabilitation at HCMC. Children with severe brain injury may need more intensive and prolonged inpatient rehabilitation. Once their medical condition is stable, many of these children may be transferred to another facility, such as the Miland E. Knapp Rehabilitation Center.
