As part of our mission to ensure access to health care for all, Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) offers free and discounted care to eligible patients and families who live in Hennepin County through a financial assistance program called Hennepin Care. Hennepin Care covers most health care services, except elective services and supplies such as dentures or hearing aids. Find resources if you live outside of Hennepin County.
Forms of Hennepin Care
Hennepin Care comes in two forms. They differ in terms of the amount of discount applied.
- Hennepin Care Plus
If you qualify for Hennepin Care Plus, you will receive a full discount on your care, i.e., free care. Check to see if you qualify.
- Hennepin Care Co-pay
If you qualify for Hennepin Care Co-pay, you will receive discounts that vary by service, and your annual out-of-pocket costs will be limited to 15 percent of your net family income. A co-pay will be required at the time of service. Check to see if you qualify.
Enrolling in Hennepin Care
To enroll in Hennepin Care, you must meet with a financial counselor and complete an application (PDF). He or she will first perform a financial assistance screening to determine if any outside forms of assistance, such as a public health care program, are available to you. Once enrolled in Hennepin Care, you will be asked to renew your application ever six months.
If you don't qualify
If you are uninsured but do not qualify for the Hennepin Care program, you will be eligible for the Self-Pay Discount. This discount is available to all uninsured patients, including patients who live outside of Hennepin County.
