In comparison to other hospital emergency department volunteer programs in the Twin Cities, the HCMC ED PEER program offers a more inclusive immersion into the environment of an emergency department. Hennepin County Medical Center is Minnesota’s premier Level One Trauma Center, and with 107,093 Emergency Services visits in 2013 is the busiest ED in the state. The ED PEER Program encompasses approximately 120 volunteers who work in different areas throughout the emergency department. Participants work closely with staff, patients and other volunteers in the emergency department. The ED PEER program also offers a flexible option for volunteers to schedule their own shifts instead of a recurring, weekly shift.
