Our Professional Team
Our professional staff provide intensive, integrated, quality programs and services for individuals with physical and cognitive impairment. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians visit and consult with patients every day and guide the treatment team through the patient’s rehabilitation program. Physicians also provide medical health care services seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Our Registered Nurses and Health Care Assistants provide nursing care to the inpatients on the Knapp nursing unit. Nurses are present 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Rehabilitation nurses use a primary and associate nursing care delivery system. This means the patients have the same nurses caring for them. The consistency or presence, teaching and nursing care helps the patients and families achieve their goals. Primary and Associate nurses work with the interdisciplinary team members to provide a comprehensive and coordinated rehabilitation program.
The primary goal of our rehabilitation program is to return the patient home to their family and community. The social worker will help coordinate the services a patient will need following discharge. Our social workers make detailed discharge plans in cooperation with the patient, the family, the treatment team, insurance providers, patient advocates and community resources.
Physical Therapy provides services to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout a person’s life. This includes providing services where movement and function are impaired by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors.
Physical Therapy also has a vestibular clinic which is used to treat certain conditions that affect balance. Patients who enjoy video games can use programs from Wii to work on a variety of balance, endurance, and coordination goals.
Occupational Therapy provides evaluation, treatment, and education to individuals whose abilities to perform daily living tasks are compromised by aging, injury or environmental factors.
Therapeutic Recreation Specialists assess the patient and provide treatments that will help the patient return safely to his/her community to resume his/her leisure lifestyle. Therapeutic recreation will use activities the patient enjoys to help reach rehabilitation goals. These goals will include improving social, emotional, physical, and thinking skills. Patient education is an important part of rehabilitation.
The Speech-Language Pathologists evaluate and treat language, cognition, and motor speech changes that can occur with hospitalization. Speech-Language Pathology is instrumental in working to evaluate and treat swallowing problems and make diet recommendations. Speech-Language Pathologists also treat speech and swallowing problems caused by tracheotomies.
Neuropsychologists use different evaluations to identify and measure any cognitive and/or behavioral changes in a patient. The information collected from an evaluation can assist in providing valuable feedback about the patient, including information processing, intellectual capabilities, attention, learning and memory, executive abilities, language processing and psychomotor skills.
Physical and cognitive changes related to brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other impairments are often overwhelming both for the patient and the patient's family. To help the patient and family through this difficult time, we offer psychological services, including individual psychotherapy, relationship and family counseling, behavior management programs, family education and support.
Our registered dietitians and dietetic technicians provide nutrition counseling to teach patients about living healthier lifestyles by promoting good nutrition.
