The primary function of the HCMC Trauma Registry is to provide data for ongoing quality improvement efforts at every level of trauma patient care. The American College of Surgeons requires HCMC to have a trauma registry in order to maintain its status as a Level 1 Trauma Center. In addition, the information collected by the Registry is used in research, resource planning, injury prevention, and trauma education. Information is also submitted to the Minnesota Department of Healths statewide trauma data bank. The Trauma Registry has collected data on HCMC trauma patients since July 1987. Information is collected from pre-hospital injury event through patient discharge. Approximately 2900 patients are included in the Registry annually. With more than 39,000 patients in the Registry database, it is one of the largest hospital databases in the state.
