The Family and Community Medicine Department provides primary medical services with a concern for the total health care of individuals and families. Family and Community Medicine physicians, who are specialists in integrating the traditional biological and clinical sciences with the behavioral and preventive aspects of medicine, serve as primary physicians. They provide comprehensive health care, serve as the patient's advocate, and coordinate the services of other medical specialists.

In addition to providing patient care, Family and Community Medicine physicians teach residents, fellows, and medical students, and are involved in clinical research.
