    scientific meetings.
  • Provide funding to enable residents to have an off-campus experience
either in the U.S. or at designated international sites.
  • Bring in well-known visiting professors for Medicine Grand Rounds and
other special events including the Alvin Schultz Visiting Professorship
and Professorships in Humanities in Medicine and Frontiers in Medicine.
  • Provide support for residents’ research projects.
  • Provide seed money for junior faculty who are beginning their research
    careers.

The Alvin Schultz Lectureship was established in honor of Dr. Schultz and annually highlights speakers who lecture on a range of topics, such as health care reform, health disparities in Minnesota, and bioterrorism.

Alvin Schultz, M.D.

Alvin Schultz, M.D., was the Chief of Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) from 1965 to 1987. Dr. Schultz set and maintained the highest standards

of teaching excellence at HCMC and by 1987, 300 residents had completed training

in internal medicine. Under his leadership, the Department of Medicine achieved national recognition for the quality of its clinical, research and educational programs.

“Dr. Schultz was Chief of Medicine at HCMC for 22 years and profoundly impacted the culture of our department,” said Dr. Scott Davies, current Chief of Medicine at HCMC.  “He insisted on a scholarly approach to clinical problems and the best care possible for each patient. The Schultz Fund honors him and also supports activities in the department that allow us to maintain the culture and educational environment that

he helped build.”
