About Cardiology

Physicians in the Division of Cardiology provide a full range of inpatient and outpatient cardiac specialty care and services throughout the Hennepin Heart Center including:

Advanced Cardiac Imaging
Our Advanced Cardiac Imaging Program offers a comprehensive assessment of cardiac structure and function including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, exercise and pharmacologic stress imaging, nuclear cardiology, coronary CT angiography and cardiac MRI.

The Echocardiography Laboratory and the Nuclear Cardiography Laboratory offer a range of monitoring and non-invasive imaging services.  Our Echocardiography Laboratory is certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories.

Arrhythmia Management Program

Our comprehensive Arrhythmia Management Program in the Electrophysiology Laboratory involves all aspects of current diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. These include drug therapy, electrophysiologic testing, pacemakers, defibrillators, and radiofrequency ablation.  Arrhythmias are diagnosed and treated with the most current technology, including 3D mapping.

The Electrocardiography Laboratory performs electrocardiograms, holter and event monitors, signal averaged EKGs and scanning of holter monitors. These tests are performed on both inpatients and outpatients, newborn through adults.

Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

Our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory offers state-of-the-art technology and treatment for heart disease including coronary and peripheral angiography and stent placement.  Two coronary digital laboratories are dedicated to offering coronary and peripheral catheter based procedures - both diagnostic and therapeutic. Coronary angiography, percutaneous intervention, rotational atherectomy, cutting balloon angioplasty and coronary stent implantation (drug eluting stents) are performed.

The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory participates in the American College of Cardiology data registry. Outcomes are compared nationally and demonstrate excellent results.

Cardiology Clinic

Our Cardiology Clinic provides daily outpatient consultation and follow-up in a location convenient to the cardiology inpatient services and laboratories.

The clinic offers specialized appointments for the entire spectrum of cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, women’s cardiovascular issues, arrhythmia management, preventative cardiology, peripheral arterial disease, cardiovascular/diabetic care and cardiovascular care in the patient with kidney disease.

Cardiothoracic Surgery

Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP)

EECP is a non-surgical treatment for people with coronary artery disease and chest pain (angina). For many patients, medications alone are not enough to control symptoms of angina.
EECP was approved by the FDA in 1995 for the treatment of angina in patients with coronary artery disease and consists of a series of pressure cuffs that are attached to the legs and thighs. These cuffs rapidly inflate and deflate timed to each heart beat and increases blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatments are performed on a daily basis in the Hennepin Heart Center for one hour each day over a seven-week treatment period.

Inpatient Services

Cardiac Medical Intensive and Intermediate Care Units

Our state-of-the-art intensive care and intermediate care units are staffed by physicians specializing in the management of acute heart attacks, severe hemodynamic problems and cardiac rhythm disturbances.

The intensive care and intermediate care units provide quality care to patients and their families in a progressive, cardiovascular intensive care setting.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
Our inpatient cardiac rehabilitation services include an entire team of specially trained and skilled clinicians working together to help the patient manage their heart condition. The goal of the rehabilitation program is to help the patient return to the best possible physical condition so they feel stronger, have more energy, and decrease their risk for future heart problems.
