Division of Clinical Epidemiology: Research

Women’s Health Initiative:
The WHI is one of the largest clinical studies of women and their health. This 15-year study involves approximately 150,000 postmenopausal women across the United States. The Berman Center for Outcomes and Clinical Research is studying 4,800 Minnesota women, between the age of 50 and 79, to see how changes in diet, hormone therapy, vitamin D and calcium affect cancer, heart disease and hip fractures.

Hypertension:
The Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. This 6-year study will follow more than 40,000 patients who suffer more than one risk factor for heart disease. The study will compare the effectiveness of newer antihypertensive drugs with standard diuretic therapy for reducing the incidence of heart disease.

Heart Disease in Diabetics:
MMRF’s Berman Center has been awarded a $12.6 million contract from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health to design and perform a historic study that will attempt to determine the best treatment for prevention of heart disease in persons with Type 2 diabetes. The Berman Center will oversee one of seven networks of clinics in the United States and Canada. Enrollment in the study will begin in late-2000.
