The Inpatient Psychiatry Services strives to create and maintain a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment while providing intensive, individualized care to patients. These services are designed for adults who need to be hospitalized for a period of time for stabilization due to a psychiatric illness. The patient, psychiatrist and a multi-disciplinary treatment team determine the goals of hospitalization.

Goals

  • To establish a treatment environment in all inpatient areas of psychiatry which establishes a norm of nonviolence and is consistent, respectful, and safe for all clients and staff.
  • To continuously improve patient care through unit and department wide quality monitoring, continuous quality improvement, and quality planning.
  • To provide high quality patient care and education that assists the patient or their caregiver the knowledge and skills to maintain or improve their health.
  • To maintain flexibility in order to respond quickly to changing needs of the community and our patients

Inpatient Units
The Inpatient Psychiatric services consist of five inpatient units, with two of the units being intensive in nature and forensic. There are a total of 87 psychiatric beds.

The most frequent diagnoses of the psychiatric patients admitted to inpatient are: Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorder, or Major Depression. The various inpatient areas are adult units serving a culturally diverse population 18 years of age and older.

O8
This is a 20-bed locked unit with two four bed wards and six double rooms. Many of the patients are involved in some type of legal process: evaluation of competency; or in the process of possible commitment as mentally ill.

O8 ICU
This is a 10-bed acute care unit specializing in the most seriously ill psychiatric patients at HCMC. The unit consists of five double rooms

and two rooms that may be used for seclusion and/or restraints. The seclusion rooms are used for emergency purposes. The patients admitted to ICU typically benefit from a smaller, more controlled environment.

B5
This a 21 bed locked unit with two Quiet Rooms, five private rooms, two double rooms and four triple rooms.

B2 ITC Unit
This is a 21-bed acute care locked unit. The unit contains two Quiet Rooms, seven private rooms and seven double patient rooms.

This is a 15-bed locked unit with 5 single rooms and 5 double rooms


Program Services
Various services/groups are offered to inpatients during their admission including Social Services, Recreational Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Medication Education Group, Interpersonal Skills group, nursing care plans, medication management, discharge planning and 1:1 time with the psychiatrist.

Treatment Team
Treatment teams include psychiatrists, residents, medical students, psychiatric nurses, mental health workers, recreational therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers.

Visiting Hours
Weekdays:
12 noon — 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. — 8:30 p.m

Weekends and Holidays:
11:00 a.m. — 8:30 p.m.
