Home Equipment Needs

It is often difficult to know what equipment will be needed when a patient is initially admitted to rehabilitation. The patient is usually much more independent at discharge. Often, no equipment is needed when patients are discharged home. If the medical condition involves certain movement restrictions, loss of physical strength or endurance, there may be a need for special equipment before patient can take a pass home or be discharged. Equipment needs are discussed at the Family Conference. Staff are available to instruct family members/caregivers how to safely use the equipment. Some equipment may not be covered by insurance. In these cases a staff member can recommend a few places where you can purchase or rent these items. In some communities, the local VFW or places of worship often times can assist with the equipment needs of those within their community.  Another source is Goodwill-Easter Seals which loans a variety of medical equipment for periods up to two months.  If equipment is needed for longer periods, you may need to purchase your own.  Typically, discount stores and other large drug store chains have lower retail costs on medical equipment that might not be covered by your insurance.  You can also check online at Craigslist for used equipment.  Another option is to rent equipment because the item will only be needed for a short period of time. Your therapists can give you a list of recommended vendors.
