Mission
The Hennepin County Medical Center Speech-Language
Pathology Department provides a continuum of diagnostic, consultative,
treatment and educational services to inpatient and outpatient infant,
child, and adult cross-cultural populations.
StaffSpeech-language pathologists hold a Master's
Degree or doctorate degree, are certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association, and are registered by the Minnesota Department of Health.
Communication Disorders / Patients Served
An individual adult or child may be referred for
a Speech-Language Pathology consultation or evaluation for any one or
more of the following reasons:
- displaying difficulties comprehending spoken
language, understanding written information, speaking in conversation
(e.g. word finding difficulties), or writing especially when onset of
difficulties is associated with neurologic disease or trauma.
- displaying difficulties chewing or swallowing
food or liquids (dysphagia), or experiencing sudden or progressive weight
loss, choking, pneumonia, or other difficulties with nutritional intake.
- displaying cognitive-communicative difficulties
of acute or slowly progressive onset, including but not limited to,
difficulties with attention and concentration, memory, conversational
interaction, learning new information, reasoning, judgment, insight,
problem solving (e.g. difficulty concentrating at work or school, feelings
of confusion or forgetfulness or difficulty performing job-related skills
or tasks at home.)
- displaying difficulties with voice production
for speech; e.g. pitch, loudness or resonance.
- displaying difficulty expressing or communicating
through speech and possibly benefiting from augmentative or alternative
communication system.
- displaying difficulty with articulation of
spoken language or fluency (e.g. stuttering).
- desiring enhancement of speech-language proficiency
and communication effectiveness; e.g. accent modification.
- displaying inability to verbally communicate
due to tracheostomy.
