Graduate Medical Education: Letter to Candidates
Is HCMC Right For Me?
Dr. Meghan Walsh
Chief Medical Education Officer, HCMC
Twelve years ago, I interviewed at HCMC as a candidate for the internal medicine residency. I knew I wanted to train in a high-performing program with a diverse patient population, but as a medical student training out of state, I knew little about its culture, educational approach or patients. A single interview was all it took to convince me: HCMC’s open, interdisciplinary culture, its passionate faculty, and its commitment to delivering the best care for all populations made it my top choice.
Much has changed since I completed my residency in 2004 and joined the faculty a year later:
- We’ve gone completely paperless with a Level 7 implementation of our Electronic Medical Records System—something less than 2% of U.S. hospitals have achieved.
- We’ve launched an Interdisciplinary Simulation and Education Center that uses state-of-the-art procedural technology to support hands-on, interactive training.
- Our residents and fellows have treated victims of the I-35W bridge collapse and cared for immigrants who speak more than 20 different languages.
- We’ve renewed our Level I trauma center status and received a “Best U.S. Hospitals” ranking from U.S. News and World Report for fourteen consecutive years.
The list goes on — but what hasn’t changed is our dedication to training the nation’s top medical professionals, and to caring for some of the most diverse and challenging patient groups anywhere in the country.
If you’re looking for an organization that truly values your work, a team of faculty who love to teach, or a setting where you will not only learn, but lead, then there’s no better choice than HCMC.
As the head of medical education and an academic hospitalist, I’m often asked what sets our programs apart. From personal experience and feedback from both our graduates and patients, I know that a rotation, residency, or fellowship at HCMC will prepare you for the toughest challenges in your field. Through our tradition of teaching and our culture of openness and inquiry, you’ll have a voice in how your program is organized, an integral role on the clinical team, and a strong working relationship with colleagues in all specialties.
Happily, I’m not alone in my story; more than 80% of our faculty completed their residencies here and returned to teach a new generation of healthcare professionals. Together, we look forward to being part of your journey. Thank you for considering HCMC.
