Transitional Year Residency: Curriculum

Hands-On Learning in a High Tech Environment

About Our Curriculum

Transitional Year Residency Program Curriculum Highlights Graphic

The Transitional Year curriculum immerses our residents in robust, hands-on learning opportunities that build proficiency and confidence. All HCMC residents take an early and active role in patient care, while learning from experienced specialists. Transitional Year residents study side-by-side with more than 200 peers from our 15 residency and fellowship programs.

Technology plays a critical role in our organization, especially in our commitment to a paperless environment. Residents quickly become proficient in all aspects of the Epic electronic medical records system, which is integrated across the inpatient and outpatient continuum, and features embedded radiology. Using their expertise, recent Transitional Year residents helped design the Epic training used across HCMC’s residency and fellowship programs.

Resident orientation also takes full advantage of the latest technology. All HCMC residents onboard in our new Interdisciplinary Simulation and Education Center with a series of action-learning circuits that build procedural skills, communication, and teamwork.

All rotations take place at our single-site campus, which promotes regular analysis, discussion, and collaboration with physicians of all fields. We maintain a well-earned reputation for our collegial atmosphere and supportive environment that fosters great patient care and learning.
