EMS Education: 2009 Advanced Level Courses

General Information
The HCMC EMS Education staff are a talented multidisplinary team of experienced healthcare providers. The teaching staff include experienced EMS paramedics, nursing personnel, and HCMC physicians, working together to provide you with current information in a low stress manner that creates an enjoyable learning experience.

Courses are held in the Hennepin County Medical Center EMS Education classrooms, located on level one of the HCMC parking ramp facility at 600 Park Avenue, Minneapolis, MN.

Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
The ATLS provider course had been recently updated. The provider course is a two-day course designed to teach physicians a systematic approach to assessment and treatment of the trauma patient. The course was developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The ATLS course conducted at HCMC is sponsored by the Emergency Medicine, Surgery and EMS Education Departments. Space is limited so register early. To register, you may print the registration form, mail the form and the tuition payment to us, we will confirm your registration status with you.

Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
The TNCC course is a two-day course, developed by the Emergency Nurses Association that provides training in trauma management principles for registered nurses. A one-day TNCC reverification course is also available. TNCC courses conducted at HCMC are co-sponsored by the Emergency Department and EMS Education.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider Course
The PALS Provider course is a two-day course that imparts knowledge for paramedics, nurses, and physicians to recognize the infant or child with respiratory or circulatory compromise which requires an emergency intervention and that can perform CPR/AED, use adjuncts for breathing, provide effective ventilation, obtain rapid vascular access and provide appropriate drug therapy to pediatric patients.
The course follows the Ameriucan Heart Associaton Guidelines and is presented as a joint effort between the EMS Education and Emergency Medicine Departments. Upon successful completion of the course, the participant is issued an American Heart Association course completion card.

APLS: The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Resource, Fourth Edition has been designed to meet the growing needs of physicians and other health care professionals. Hennepin Count Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 16 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. Physicians should only claim credit commesurate with the with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider and Provider Renewal
The ACLS Provider course is a two-day course that teaches paramedics, nurses, and physicians the essentials of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiac care as established by American Heart Association guidelines. ACLS Renewal is a one-day course. Both courses are conducted as a joint effort between the EMS Education department and Emergency Medicine. Upon successful completion of the course, the participant is issued an American Heart Association course completion card.

CPR Instructor and Instructor Renewal
The American Heart Association has now required that all new instructors must take the Core Instructor Course. This is available on line at: americanheart.org/coreinstructorcourse.
