Schedule

Class hours are 8 am to 5 pm.

Two-Day Course Schedule

Location
Class will be held in the EMS Education classrooms on level one of the HCMC Parking Facility at 600 Park Avenue in Minneapolis (view directions). Parking is available in the ramp and at several surface lots located nearby (view campus map). Coffee, soda, and vending machines are available in the building. There are restaurants within walking distance and a refrigerator and microwave oven available for use.

Pre-course Work
All the materials needed for testing will be covered during class.

You may find that a current First Responder textbook serves as a good supplement. We recommend AAOS First Responder-Your First Response in Emergency Care, 3rd Edition. This text is available to purchase for $59.00. There are no specific reading assignments.

Course Completion
During the course you will be trained in an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Course. Records of your completion will be kept on file. If you need a CPR card, one will be issued for a fee. You will also receive an updated First Responder registration card from the EMS Regulatory Board. If you would like to check the date of expiration of your certification search the EMSRB site. Information about the First Responder certification issued by the Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board can viewed by reading the First Responder Registration Fact Sheet.

Cancellation
A cancellation fee of $39.00 will be charged for cancellations that occur within three weeks of the course start date. No refund is issued for no shows.

Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board First Responder Registration
Fact Sheet

During the 1997 Minnesota legislative session, a bill was passed providing for registration of First Responders.

Successful completion of a First Responder course at HCMC EMS Education will result in state registration with the EMS Regulatory Board. Registration is valid for two years, expiring at the end of the month in which it was issued. To renew First Responder registration, a First Responder Refresher course must be completed prior to the expiration date. A 40-hour First Responder course will need to be successfully completed if the registration is not renewed within twelve months of the expiration date. If you were issued a First Responder certificate before August 1, 1997, your current registration will expire in 1999, at the end of the month in which the certificate was issued.

National registration is also available for First Responders. The First Responder course at HCMC EMS Education meets the requirements for national registration; however, the National Registry exam is not given at the end of the course. If you are interested in taking the National Registry exam, arrangements can be made with the EMS Regulatory Board by calling Deb Teske at (800) 747-2011 or (612) 627-5402.
