HCMC Psychology Internship Program

Supervision

The HCMC psychology training faculty value the opportunity to work closely with interns in supervision. While all staff have adopted an "open door policy," interns are assigned several specific supervisors. Each intern has a primary supervisor who serves as a mentor and coordinates the training experience for the intern throughout the training year. For the adult-track interns, the primary supervisor also provides supervision of therapy; for the child-track interns, the primary supervisor provides supervision of assessment.

Both the adult- and child-track interns are assigned adult therapy supervisors for cases seen in the Adult Therapy Clinic. Supervision of adult assessment is provided by the Adult Assessment Clinic staff. All interns spend one afternoon per week in the Adult Assessment Clinic. For the child-track interns, this takes place during the three-month adult inpatient rotation, whereas the adult-track interns remain in this placement for the entire training year. The adult-track interns are assigned supervisors during their three-month rotations on the Child Adolescent Psychiatry Service. The attending staff psychologist supervises all consults to medical services.

All interns receive additional supervision by attending a weekly group therapy seminar. They also participate in post-group discussions with the staff therapist or facilitator after specific group sessions. During the Acute Psychiatric Services (APS) rotation, interns work with and are supervised by an APS staff member. Other elective rotations, such as neuropsychology, are supervised by the specific staff on those services.

Supervision is done in an apprenticeship manner, such that clinical skills, professional attitudes, and ethical standards are initially modeled by training staff and then performed in a progressively more independent fashion by the interns over the course of the training year. This approach also provides a sequential and cumulative training experience that is graded in complexity. Audiotapes are used for therapy supervision.
