I came out from NC. Never imagined I would be happily living in the mid-west. The program is great. I knew coming in, Hennepin had a great reputation and now I believe it is well deserved. As far as the city goes......if you like indy music, micro brews, good food and outdoor sports this city has it all. |

As an applicant, I looked hard for EM/IM programs that offered outstanding training in both specialties. With strong traditions of teaching in both departments, HCMC was a perfect fit for me. As a resident, you'll get plenty of autonomy while learning from leaders in their fields. And with Minneapolis being such an awesome and accessible city, the program really has it all. After finishing at the hospital, you can be enjoying the great concerts, lakes, restaurants, and trails within minutes! |

Charles Bruen, MD, PhD - charles@bruen.org
University of Texas Southwestern
Dr. Bruen comes from the high desert of the forgotten southwest. Before deciding on a career in medicine he earned an engineering degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which led to rocket manufacturing and launching, as well as collecting treasure maps and dealing in used cars. He graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, during which he was part of the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellows program. |

I've found HCMC to be a phenomenal place to train in both EM and IM, with superb facilities, excellent teaching, helpful and friendly people, as well as a great patient population. My wonderful wife and kids keep me entertained outside the hospital, but you can also find me playing wiffle ball, reading Calvin & Hobbes, cycling the miles of fantastic trails here, snowboarding, or summiting 14ers when I find time to make it back to Colorado.

On match day, I looked back at the 14 years I'd spent in Minnesota and sucked in my breath as I realized I'd just signed up for another 5 years away from my previous home in New Mexico. We're an excellent training program whose bread and butter medicine compliments the surgically-heavy ED side of things. All this great training in the context of a catchment that has tremendous ethnic and socioeconomic diversity far out of proportion to my expectations for its location in the Midwest. |

I grew up in Vancouver and did undergrad and med school in North Carolina, and have to say I've really enjoyed the move to Minneapolis. I chose HCMC for the excellent teaching, research, and hands on trauma experience, but did not expect to love the cities as much as I have. With plenty of running and biking trails, lots of outdoor patios, and plenty of hiking and camping within a short drive it's been a great place to move. Although still getting a feel of what it's like to be a Minnesotan, I've got cross country skis and tried the cheese curds at the state fair and am loving it!

As a Kansas native who always preferred the hot summers to the cold, icy winters, I never imagined I'd end up in Minnesota. But upon visiting HCMC, I knew this was where I wanted to train. At HCMC, I've found a supportive staff, great residents, and a culturally diverse patient population. In particular, I value the opportunity to care for immigrants from a wide variety of countries and to train in global health issues. In my free time, I enjoy exploring Minneapolis, from the lakes and miles of bike trails to local coffee shops and unique stores.
