PGY-2 Pharmacy Health System Administration / M.S. Residency Program

Hennepin County Medical Center | Minneapolis, Minnesota

Residency Director: Bruce Thompson R.Ph, M.S.

Purpose

The purpose of this 24-month PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency Program in Health System Administration with a Master’s Degree in Social and Administrative Pharmacy is to provide residents the opportunity to accelerate their growth beyond entry-level professional competence in patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services, and to further the development of leadership skills that can be applied in any position and in any practice setting.

Graduates of this Hennepin Country Medical Center PGY-2 residency program will be competent and confident practitioners of clinical patient care in multiple practice environments. They will be accountable for achieving optimal medication management as collaborative members of the health care team. They will develop a strong foundation in pharmacy services management through flexible rotations in hospital pharmacy operations, finance and asset management, clinical pharmacy management, ambulatory clinic management and outpatient pharmacy operations. Through this experiential training, the resident will:

  • Develop advanced knowledge and skills in clinical and ambulatory pharmacy management
  • Develop expertise in pharmacy operations, medication safety, quality improvement, financial management, interdepartmental collaboration and human resource management
  • Exercise skill in educating and communicating with other health care professionals, patients, and peers on topics relating to patient centered care.
  • Enhance skills in providing drug information, detecting and reporting adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, patient-specific drug selection and dosage adjustment, and therapeutic drug monitoring
  • Advance their knowledge and understanding of pharmacy leadership styles and management techniques
  • Demonstrate professional maturity by following a personal philosophy of practice, assessing their own performance, exhibiting commitment to the profession, and exercising leadership in improving the safety of the medication-use system
