PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program

Hennepin County Medical Center | Minneapolis, Minnesota

Purpose

The purpose of this 12-month PGY-2 Specialty Residency in Critical Care at Hennepin County Medical Center is to develop the resident’s expertise, knowledge and skills in the pharmacotherapeutic management of critical care patients.  The resident will learn to conceptualize, integrate and transform accumulated experiences and knowledge into new and improved pharmacy services.  Graduates of this PGY-2 residency program will be competent and confident practitioners of direct and indirect patient care with advanced skills in the pharmacotherapeutic management of critically ill patients. They will be accountable for achieving optimal medication management as collaborative members of the health care team.

Through this experiential training, the specialty resident will:

  • Develop advanced knowledge and skills in the area of critical care
  • Contribute to an interdisciplinary patient care team offering patient-specific therapeutic interventions to prevent, treat, cure, rehabilitate and alleviate medical conditions and diseases
  • Exercise skill in educating and communicating with other health care professionals, on topics relating to patient centered care.
  • Enhance skills in providing drug information, detecting and reporting adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, patient-specific drug selection and dosage adjustment, and therapeutic drug monitoring

Demonstrate professional maturity by following a personal philosophy of practice, assessing their own performance, exhibiting commitment to the profession, and exercising leadership in improving the safety of the medication-use system

Residency Rotation Requirements

PGY-2 goals/objectives are achieved over a 12 month period. As a teaching and research-based hospital, medical resident and pharmacy student teaching and precepting is emphasized throughout the year in addition to residency project research. Flexibility in the length and amount of elective rotations allows the resident to tailor this program to their specific needs.

  • Teach/ co-precept PGY-1 Residents and Pharm.D IV Students on critical care rotations
  • Give in-services to hospital, pharmacy and nursing staff as requested
  • Attend and participate on hospital committees

Stipend: Approximately $42,000

Staffing: Approximately every 4th weekend

Program Requirements

  • Pharmacy degree from an ACPE Accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Successful completion of an ASHP Accredited PGY-1 Residency Program
  • Eligibility for Minnesota Licensure
  • On-site interview
