t is the goal of Hennepin County Medical
Center's General Practice Residency Program to produce general dentists
with advanced skills in order to better serve a diverse community and
practice as a part of a total health care team.
1. Train general dentists with advanced skills in order to provide multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care to a diverse community and to practice as part of a total health care team.
2. Improve the resident's clinical skills and knowledge in all aspects of the practice of general dentistry.
3. Prepare residents to serve their community by understanding the oral health needs of a diverse community and by acting as a primary oral health care provider for diverse patient groups and those with special needs.
4. Train the resident to function effectively in a hospital setting, and to practice as part of a health care team.
5. Train the residents to participate in interdisciplinary management of medically compromised patients.
6. Train residents to be proficient in the management of dental emergencies.

During this 5-week rotation, the resident
gains experience in induction of general anesthesia, airway management,
intubation, IV sedation, and patient monitoring. The resident works
one-on-one with a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the main
operating room suites of the hospital. |

This rotation provides
residents with an incredible educational opportunity to plan treatment
and provide comprehensive dental care to patients with complex
medical and dental disease. The clinic is staffed by experienced
general dentists and specialists dedicated to teaching.
The rotation
includes advanced experience in all aspects of dentistry including:
Prosthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics,
Management of patients with TMD and Craniofacial Pain. As part of
this rotation, residents are assigned to the operating room with
General Dentistry and Pediatrics.

One
week is spent in the Emergency Department observing and assisting
in the management of various medical emergencies,including allergic
reactions,acute MI, cardiac arrest, and trauma.The resident will
spend one evening riding along on an ambulance.

During this 2-week rotation the resident will be part of an internal
medicine team. They will have the opportunity to observe the physical
manifestations of various diseases. The resident will also gain experience
taking medical histories and doing physical examinations.
 |
The
resident will gain experience doing routine extractions, third
molar extractions, pre-prosthetic surgery, and the management
of odontogenic infections. In addition, the residents assist in
the Operating Room with treatment of maxillofacial trauma, odontogenic
infections and orthognathic surgery.
