PGY-1 OB/GYN

TEAM: consists of a G4, G2 OB/Gyn resident, yourself, possibly another intern and multiple students.

CALL DAY: Call days start similar to non-call days unless someone is laboring, then you stay in labor and delivery if needed.  Start time is 0630 where everyone meets in post partum floor on G4 and starts to see the post partum patients, writing notes.  Senior resident arrives around 7and if there is any problem patients you can see them together.  You also have to sign all med student notes and at least stop by and say hi to them.  At 0700 there is an OB and Gyn sign out and usually a short lecture given by staff.  The rest of the day is then spent in labor and delivery, bringing new lives into the world.  Interns have priority on the deliveries and then students.  All patients managed in labor and delivery you staff with the G2 first and then she/he will staff with the senior and on up the ladder.  Other duties include writing labor notes Q2, magnesium notes, and helping the G2 see patients that come into L&D triage to rule out labor.  If there are surgeries, C-sections, you may go in and help out if you like, but this is not required.  Call day ends at 8am the following morning.  You are responsible for all discharge dictations on vaginal deliveries, C-sections are done by the G2, there is a format to follow so this is relatively straightforward.  Then, you sign out and go home.

NON-CALL DAYS:  start the same as above on post partum at 0630, then lecture, then clinic at 0830-1630 with an hour break at lunch.  Clinic is like all others, you sign up and see patients, then staff them with whichever faculty are there that day.

CALL ROOMS are located in L&D

THINGS TO MASTER: vaginal delivery, pelvic exam.
