happens to be a level one trauma center. This experience provides you
with exposure to a different patient population and a different system
of operation.
Emergency Orthopedics
During this month shifts are devoted exclusively
to the orthopedics area of the emergency department, providing an intensive
ortho experience.
Pediatrics
The pediatric month is divided into two parts.

you will be part of an inpatient team, with some outpatient clinic responsibilities.
Call is every 4th night on the inpatient component of the rotation.
General/Trauma Surgery

You will take trauma call every fourth night with your surgical team.
On the floors you will care for trauma, as well as emergent and elective
surgery patients. There is usually ample opportunity for procedures.
Ob/Gyn
You will function as a first year OB/GYN resident on this service. Inpatient care and outpatient clinic responsibilities predominate on non-call days. Call is every 4th night on average where your primary responsibility is on Labor and Delivery. Our residents average 10 vaginal deliveries.
Cardiology
This is an inpatient service in which you will
admit and care for both CCU and floor patients. Call
is every 4th night.
MICU
One of the most highly praised off-service rotations,
you will work on a team with a second year emergency medicine resident
and critical care medicine staff. Call is every 4th night.

In your second year you will engage in more independent patient care and the care of multiple simultaneous patients. You will be responsible for many of the procedures in the stabilization room. 19-21 shifts per rotation. Shifts are 9 hours.
Resuscitation
Along with some emergency department shifts, you will take ATLS, APLS andACLS-Instructor courses. There will be 16 hours of classroom lectures centered around Stabilization Room management such as airway, pharmacology, etc.
North Memorial Medical Center ED
North Memorial is a private, community-based hospital, which happens to be a level one trauma center. This provides you with exposure to a different patient population and a different system of operation. The experience is similar to that of the G1 year, with more opportunity for procedures and management of critically ill patients.
MICU
You will have a great deal of responsibility as senior resident of a team, caring for critically ill patients. You will supervise an intern and usually a medical student. Call is every 4th night.
General/Trauma Surgery
On this service you will be part of a team comprised of a chief surgical resident, yourself and two interns. As the second year resident, you will handle all ED and hospital consults, as well as evaluate and admit all trauma patients while you are on call. Responsibilities include management of SICU patients. Call is every 4th night.
Orthopedics
This rotation is composed of three 10 hour clinical shifts in the ED where you function as the primary Emergency Orthopedic consultant. The resident "consults and manages" all patients with orthopedic issues, including but not limited to, fractures, dislocations, joint aspirations, and tendon repairs. Additionally, residents are involved in all procedural sedations performed during their shift. A 1/2 day Sports Medicine clinic experience is included after conferences on Thursday afternoon. Call is every Friday for coverage of orthopedic patients in the ED requiring procedural intervention.
Neurosurgery
As a trauma center widely-recognized for its neurosurgical care, neurosurgical emergencies from all over the state are transferred to HCMC. As a member of the neurosurgery team, you will consult on, diagnose and treat all neurosurgical
emergencies. This is an intense SICU experience in which you will also become skilled
at reading spine films and head CT scans. Your critical care skills grow tremendously during this rotation.
PGY-3 HCMC ED
As a third year resident, you act as a supervisor to all other residents in the role of senior resident. Pediatric emergency medicine is integrated into the schedule throughout the year. You will be responsible for running all critical stabilization room cases, including trauma resuscitations, and managing all airways.
