with emphasis on the behavioral aspects of disease. On graduation our residents are equipped to provide the full spectrum of family medicine services whether they practice in rural Minnesota, a bustling inner city clinic or in a suburban setting.
Our curriculum provides teaching in full spectrum Family Medicine and we are recognized teachers in the following areas of training:
1. Obstetrics: We provide a rich obstetrics experience and our residents develop expertise in the management of low and moderate risk obstetrics including the management of mothers with gestational diabetes.
2. Sports Medicine: We have the most experienced Sports Medicine fellowship in the country. One of the benefits of this expertise is that all of our residents receive superior training in the diagnosis and management of sports injuries.
3. Diabetes education: Residents receive specialized training in diabetes care and management. They work in a multidisciplinary team with diabetes nurses and educators to provide care to the large Latin population at the FMC.
4. Wellness and Integrative Medicine: Holistic medicine is also one of our strong points and this approach is taught through conferences and in the Integrative Medicine curriculum. The residency program at HCMC is one of six Family Medicine Residency programs that are engaged in a pilot project to integrate holistic medicine into the general Family Medicine curriculum.
5. Behavioral Medicine
Our residents are our greatest asset. They are ethnically and culturally diverse representing the diaspora that our country has become. Despite this diversity, they are united by the fact that they all seek to become experts in family medicine and provide excellent patient care.
Our faculty is as diverse as our residents and many of them have years of experience in training Family Medicine residents. They have private practice experience, fellowship training, and degrees in graduate medical education and public health. Each has an area of expertise and many are leaders in their field of interest. They are enthusiastic to train Family Physicians for the future.
The Family Medicine Clinic is a busy urban clinic located in Midtown Minneapolis. It serves as a medical home for a large Spanish community and other ethnic groups in a culturally diverse neighborhood.
Here faculty and residents, work side by side with physician extenders, nurses and interpreters to provide excellent care to our patients. For the last 5 years, our hospital, the Hennepin County Medical Center, has been named one of the 100 best hospitals in the country. We are proud to be a part of
an institution whose main mission is to provide care to the underserved.
I invite you to take a closer look at our residency program. Come for a visit. The residents, faculty
and I will be delighted to show you around.
Sincerely,
ALLYSON BROTHERSON, MD, FAAFP
