Family and Community Medicine Residency Program

What makes our Program Unique

Diverse Urban Medicine

Family Medical Center is located in an Hispanic-influenced area of South Minneapolis, yet draws patients from a variety of cultural, educational and socio-economic backgrounds. This cultural mix affords Family Medicine residents the opportunity to participate in the care of a wide variety of illnesses and issues that they might not normally be exposed to. We are proud in offer our services
to a population that is all too often overlooked in today's complex health care environment.

Enhanced Cooperative Environment
"Enhanced" is how we describe the cooperative environment our residents share with other residents at HCMC. Our Family Medicine residents draw on the expertise of their own faculty and peers as well as nationally recognized experts in other fields.

One of HCMC's missions is to be an outstanding teaching hospital. All HCMC first-year residents work together on a variety of rotations and develop close working relationships. This fosters a supportive environment when interacting with colleagues and consultants. It is truly the best of both worlds.

Sports Medicine
The Hennepin County Medical Center Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is based within our department. The University of Minnesota and Methodist Hospital/ Park Nicollet Health Services also contribute to the fellowship. Four sports medicine fellows are trained each year.

The clinic-based fellowship provides training for our residents in the areas of musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment, medical issues in athletes and physically active individuals, exercise and nutrition. Our residents also participate in didactic sessions in sports medicine presented by the fellows, a physical therapist and the sports medicine faculty.

Opportunities are available to work with athletes of all varieties. Our residents work with high school and college athletes in both a clinic setting and athletic training rooms. Sideline experiences are also available to those who are interested.

Physician Wellness and Resilience

Residency training is a stressful and challenging time. The coping strategies that residents learn during training will carry into their future lives and careers.
