Wards: The structure of our resident ward services (general medicine, cardiology, MICU, and renal medicine) is traditional. Patients are admitted by a resident team which consists of interns and medical students and is led by one or more senior residents. The resident team accepts primary responsibility for the care of their patients from time of admission through discharge. We take pride in the fact that the residents are usually the only physicians who write orders for the patients on their teams. This reflects our commitment to learning through experience.
There is usually one attending physician per resident team. The attending physician rounds on every patient every day with the resident team. Attending physicians supervise major clinical decisions and teach both during the care of individual patients as well as through didactic lectures. There are no private physicians who follow and care for patients in parallel to the resident teams. Likewise, rotating fellows offer great support to the residents, but do not assume primary responsibility for patient care.
