HCMC is a great place to train in internal medicine. The hospital and the department of medicine are strongly committed to our mission as a "safety net" hospital where our diverse patients receive the highest level of care within our power. We have a patient centered, friendly, and collegial environment.
We are also strongly committed to the education of physician-trainees at multiple levels. We are an important component of internal medicine training for medical students attending the University of Minnesota Medical School. Our internal medicine residency is the centerpiece of medical education within the Department. We contribute to the formation of internists who are fully

qualified to care for very sick patients and who are well prepared for advanced training opportunities that meet their interest. Our department is also engaged in advanced training in many subspecialties of internal medicine. In most cases this training is a core component of fellowship programs based at the University of Minnesota. We also have a Critical Care fellowship and Geriatric Medicine fellowship that are centered at Hennepin County Medical Center.
The internal medicine residents are at the center of all this educational activity, teaching the students and younger residents and learning from the fellows and from the staff. And of course the process is not always that linear. The more senior trainees – including the staff – benefit from the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm of the residents and students as all contribute to a true teaching and learning environment
Finally, we are also strongly committed to basic and applied research, particularly in areas of prevention and treatment of conditions that are over represented in the patient base that we serve. These areas include: diabetes, chronic renal failure, cardiovascular disease, obesity, addiction, toxicology, tuberculosis, HIV infection, Hepatitis C, sleep apnea, and certain aspects of hemodynamic and organ support for critically ill and injured patients. Women's health, and international health, and geriatric issues including dementia are other important areas of investigation.
In summary this internal medicine training program has many attributes that lead to superior training. The hospital has high volume and high acuity, but also a lot of resources to meet its clinical mission. There is a large staff with diverse interests and talents who are all strongly committed to teaching. There is a true teaching hospital environment where residents accept gradually increasing responsibility as they mature – and yet always have the back-up that they need. The mix of residents, students, fellows and staff encourages constant discussion and analysis and a scholarly approach to patient problems. The environment is warm, friendly, and supportive. And the product is outstanding, in large measure due to the excellent trainees who come here. The internal medicine residents make huge positive contributions while they are here. In return they get the training and experience that they need to become great internists and to move successfully to the next step in their path – whether toward practice or to advanced training. We are looking for students who want to make that trade.
