Internal Medicine Residency Program

Who We Are

Our Community:

HCMC Internal Medicine Residency Program is a close community. There are approximately 18-20 residents in each training class and 90 full-time faculty members in the Department of Internal Medicine. Many of our faculty members are active in research and scholarly work, and all have full academic appointments at the University of Minnesota Medical School.  All of them choose to be at HCMC because they are committed to the residency program and to the care of our underserved patients. Most faculty members have been at HCMC for over 5 years, and many have committed their entire academic careers to this institution.

Both our residents and faculty members spend the majority of their time at one site, the HCMC campus. During their time in training, our residents develop close personal relationships with each other and also with faculty. We pride ourselves on our collegial atmosphere and supportive environment for trainees.

Our Residents:

HCMC internal medicine residents are a diverse group of men and women who share some common traits: we are committed to working for an underserved patient population, we value learning through experience, and we seek a balance between autonomous patient care and supportive supervision.

Many of our residents attended the University of Minnesota Medical School (with good reason—they rotated here and choose HCMC based on personal experience with our program), and we also draw residents from throughout the country and truly from around the world.

Many of our residents have families or choose to have children during training. Many of our trainees are active in the community. Many are bilingual or have extensive international experience in health care. Others have excelled in prior careers outside of medicine. All of this adds to the richness and diversity within our training program.
