Hennepin County Medical Center

Internal Medicine Residency Program

Letter from Dr. Anne Pereira, Program Director

Anne Pereira, MDThank you for your interest in our program. We feel we have one of the finest residency programs in the country and would like to share with you some characteristics that make Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) a special place.

Our Mission: We care for a diverse group of patients,

acting as the safety-net hospital for greater Minneapolis

as well as a major Level 1 trauma center for the Northern Midwest. We are devoted to care of the medically underserved while taking care of a spectrum of patients.

Our Educational Philosophy: We believe residents will

learn best in a supportive atmosphere we call "supervised autonomy." Ours is a resident-run hospital, so residents always have the opportunity to assume primary responsibility for their patients' care. However, we take very seriously our responsibility as supervising faculty to support our residents in clinical decision making and so make it a priority to be available to them. Fellows from our own independent fellowship programs as well as those rotating in our University of Minnesota affiliated programs, add additional support.

Our Commitment to Innovation in Education – The Educational Innovations Project Our faculty is committed to continuous improvement in the education and training we provide for our residents.  To maintain this commitment, we recognize the need for continuous innovation.  Our efforts in this area have led to our being selected as one of the 17 internal medicine programs in the country as a leading edge innovator in internal medicine training. Our innovations focus in the following key areas: 1)enabling residents to immerse themselves in a clinical setting by separating ambulatory clinic responsibilities from inpatient ward service rotations, 2) supporting residents in longitudinal, small group quality improvement projects, and 3) through an interactive evaluation and mentoring system, encouraging residents to tailor their third year of training.

Our Residents: The residents at HCMC are a talented and bright group of physicians who come from varied backgrounds. Our placement of residents in fellowships is impressive, and our residents are recruited by hospitals throughout the United States as the high quality of their training is widely known. Most importantly, however, our residents continue to foster an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship that we believe is second to none in the country.

Our Faculty: All staff physicians in the Department of Medicine at HCMC hold University of Minnesota Medical School faculty appointments. Many are nationally recognized as leaders in their fields, and all are active in research, teaching and patient care.

Our Hospital: HCMC is a well-funded University affiliated county hospital. We have the benefits of being part of the University of Minnesota while caring for patients in a single-site program. Our institution provides clinical experience for the medical students at the University of Minnesota, and at any one time 16-25 students are rotating in the Department of Medicine alone. We have been ranked in US News and World Report among "America's Best Hospitals" in multiple medical subspecialties over the last decade. Hennepin truly is a leader in the field of medicine. HCMC is a special place, and we hope you will seriously consider our program to further your medical education and training.

We look forward to hearing from you soon,

Anne Pereira, MD, MPH
